What is the origin of Valentine's Day?

The origin of the celebration of St. Valentine's Day can be traced back to 3rd century Rome, when Emperor Claudius II, who ruled at the time, decided to ban marriage between young men on the pretext that unmarried men would fight better and be more willing to go to war if they were not emotionally attached to a family.

Valentine, the bishop of Terni (Italy), was convicted for officiating secret weddings under Christian ritual. The officer in charge of his imprisonment wanted to put him to the test and challenged him to restore sight to his daughter Julia, who had been born blind. Valentine accepted the challenge and worked the miracle in the name of Jesus, which resulted in both the officer and his family converting to Christianity. After she regained her sight, the officer asked Valentine to tutor his daughter; and the bishop ended up falling in love with the girl. But the story didn’t have a happy or romantic ending. The priest remained imprisoned until the 14th of February, 269, date on which he was executed.

In the beheading of St. Valentine in Rome we find the first sign of the celebration known today as Valentine's Day. On the eve of his execution, the priest sent a farewell note to his beloved with the words “From your Valentine”, words which are now used by lovers in Valentine’s Day cards..
